Filling the Moulds

Ive started filling up the moulds with batches of tarmac and resin. From my experiments I created my own measurement rule:

-200g of General Purpose Resin + cold lay asphalt resin , Needs 8/9 Catalyst to set in 45 mins.

Creating the batches of tarmac was a long process and required a lot of physical exercise to mix. The process goes like this:

1) 200g Resin in a big tub, Add black pigment

2) Crumble into small pieces cold lay asphalt into the resin

3) Mix

4) Add 8 catalyst

5) MIX QUICK AND THOROUGH

6) Pour into Mould

The Return of the NOS Canister

Using left over tarmac I put some into moulds I had made last semester of NOS canisters. At this stage I am unsure of wether i'm going to use them but I aim to make at least 4 a day whilst i'm making the sculptures.

I really like the fact that it crosses over the imagery of the canister with the actual road- seeing as you always see them laying around in the gutters of roads or crushed into the surface.

Burger Lights

My next inspiration for shape is traffic lights. This will be a more obvious form that sits within the space but I really like the idea of it. Simple, minimal. I aim to make three same sized circles that would be about the same size as the three red, amber, green lights you see in traffic lights. And yes they look like burgers...

The exaggerated Speed bump

My first idea for shape is inspired by speed bumps. However I dont intent it to just obviously replicate this form, after all I want the space to seem hallucinogenic and distorted. I plan to make it really high- making it seem extremely impractical if it were to be used for its original function.

The Exclime-ation Mark

My next idea for sculpture is the exclamation mark you see on street signs. Taking just the punctuation rather than the whole sign as the whole sign would again be abit too obvious. I think this piece would be really nice if it was made to start on the wall and then extend to the floor- using and working with the space it sits within.

The Production of the MOULD

After a lot of deliberation and help from my 3D technician I was able to get back a sense of direction. I was prompted that its important to do things that are personal to me and that the fact that I am making sculptures out of this material does have a lot of potential for something conceptual. Maybe it would be beneficial to think conceptually as something to go on with ideas.

I began to think about 'rave' once again and the times when its 6/7am in the morning and things are getting weird. When you feel somewhat at danger not just by things around you but also with yourself as you are questioning wether what you are seeing is real or whether it's the prolonged indulgence in narcotics. Its uncomfortable, disorientating and not necessarily a place where someone wants to be. Instead of considering spaces inside, the material lead me to spaces outside. Perhaps making forms that are inspired by shapes outside would be an interesting outlet.
